Lake Arrowhead Lodge
Lake Arrowhead
Land of The Sky Blue Water

Like a cup of clear blue water, a mile wide and two and a half miles long, Lake Arrowhead nestles in the San Bernardino Mountains a mile above sea-level.

Dreaming and placid in the wind-clean atmosphere the great lake ripples along it’s fourteen miles of pine-fringed shore, a scant two and a half hours away from Los Angeles, yet as secure from the hurry and noise of the city as if it were on the other side of the world.

Another World, Two and One Half Hours Away

Here, a mile high above the great arrowhead –a natural rock formation on the mountainside below from which the lake takes its name –is peace and relaxation for the city weary. Here, but a short drive from the city is the chug of trout, the clop-clop of a live wire horse, the invigorating tingle of mountain water, and the crack of the driver as your ball sails straight down an all grass fairway.

Deep in Lake Arrowhead’s pine woods are nights of sleep such as come only from exercise in bracing mountain air. Here is energy to be stored up against another year in the crowded city. Here is every sport, every diversion, every comfort you could wish for.

In the following pages you will find the story of Lake Arrowhead –of a land where days are full of zest, and nights are full of peace.

To reach Lake Arrowhead from Los Angeles you drive out along the purple Sierra Madre Range, through the fragrance of the orange groves, through the green vineyards, past the spreading orchards and rich farmlands to where, sixty miles away, San Bernardino snuggles against the foothills.

There you turn east, straight toward the mysterious mountains that hover above San Bernardino. Of a sudden you are in them. First to greet you will be the pungent scent of green growing things in leafy tunnels, and the clear laugh of a galloping mountain stream that tumbles along beside Waterman Canyon Road.

Horse Trail Around the Lake

"Ye goodly game of ancient Scot,
That never was a care begot-
In thy name, what fun we stole,
And gathered at the eighteenth hole."

-The Sportsman's Calendar

Then you start to climb on the smooth, wide State Highway, high-gear road –pride of the mountains. Turns are wide, banked for safety and swift ascent. On either side at first is the lush growth of the lower hills –then, suddenly, far below spreads out the great valley like a giant checkerboard –from the stately snow-clad mountains to the slumbering blue Pacific Ocean. On clear days you can see Santa Catalina Island on the dim horizon. Northward, Old Baldy lifts a snowy head. At night, like a handful of jewels flung carelessly across black velvet, you see the twinkle of myriad lights of San Bernardino, Redlands, Riverside and Colton far below.

Thus you wind swiftly up the face of the mountain, sweeping suddenly into the great firs and pines of Arrowhead Woods.

Deep is the aromatic scent of the pine trees: cool is the breeze that murmurs in their tips. Then, a flicker of deep blue through the forest and you has arrived

Lake Arrowhead is Different

If you have pictured Lake Arrowhead as the typical mountain lake resort, you have a delightful surprise in store. For you arrive in a quaint Norman English Village on the shore of the bluest lake you have ever seen; a village lulled by soft mountain wind, shaded by great pines and firs, peopled by gay folks sports-clad and happy.

Here is the favorite rendezvous of Southern California’s smart set. Everywhere are tempting relaxations, sports, entertainment, gayety –or the quiet solitude of a vast mountain fastness.

A motorboat cuts a silver crescent on the shimmering lake; tanned bathers swim through the bracing water: a short distance away golfers driver down emerald fairways on the mile-high golf course, surrounded by wild beauty and natural mountain hazards. Horsemen canter easily along soft dirt bridle paths, and from somewhere comes the soft seductive rhythm of a dance orchestra.

It is so clean, so young, so refreshing after the hot press of city life. You can hardly wait to jump into the care-free days of play and rest.

There is Only ONE Lake Arrowhead

Here is a mountain lake resort that is unique; not alone in California but in the whole country. Here is the favorite rendezvous for the Southland’s smart set, who enjoy either the fascinating hotel life of Lake Arrowhead’s two famous hostelries, The Lodge, and The Tavern, or who are guests in the hundreds of beautiful mountain lodges privately owned around the shores of the lake.

For so strong is the charm of this mountain-top lake that many interesting and wealthy people from all over California and the West have permanent mountain lodges in Arrowhead Woods. These private lodges are of the attractive Norman English type, restricted carefully, and set back from the water’s edge. More than a million and a half dollars have been expended here at Lake Arrowhead for private homes by people who seek to make this gem of the Sierras a yearly interlude in their lives. Yet these lodges do not intrude. Homes costing many thousands of dollars are hidden away in the pungent heart of the woods.

This is another thing that has made Lake Arrowhead different –the mingling of these lodge-owners with guests at the hotels. At the height of the season the hotel registers fairly scintillate with famous names –motion picture and stage celebrities, authors, writers, explorers –all seeking relaxation and rest at Lake Arrowhead.

Gay are the tea dances, bright are the smart evening affairs at the hotels. Bridge-teas, moonlight dances, steak suppers under the stars, and a veritable galaxy of colorful and fascinating things to do are always under way at Lake Arrowhead.

Or if you are weary, if you seek the calm solitude of mountain peaks, a slumbering lake and the soft song of pines at night, Lake Arrowhead will bring you peace, iron out the cares of business and social life at home, leave you refreshed, interested and eager.
